Huncote Leisure Centre Closure - Extended
BLABY DISTRICT COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE -
Huncote Leisure Centre closure extended
On Tuesday (02 November) Blaby District Council closed Huncote Leisure Centre after the discovery of elevated levels of landfill gas during planned mitigation works.
During the course of the works contractors have identified other areas of the site that require monitoring.
With the requirement of additional monitoring, Blaby District Council now needs to undertake additional landfill gas mitigation works. These will be carried out by our contractor, and these works will extend the projected completion date.
As part of these additional works, we may need to remove a small amount of vegetation and trees to gain access to the site. This will be kept to a minimum and we will reinstate anything removed during this work.
We therefore anticipate that the closure of Huncote Leisure Centre will be extended until Friday 26 November. This remains precautionary whilst the additional works are completed.
Residents should continue to be reassured that at the moment there is no immediate risk to residential properties. Every day measurements are being taken across the site, and work is taking place to install the gas monitoring and venting infrastructure.
As a precaution, anyone living in the immediate area of the site is asked to keep doors and windows closed. Residents should avoid visiting the Leisure Centre and the land in that area whilst works take place.
Cllr Terry Richardson, Leader of the Council, said: "Following the investigations of our contractors, we are taking action to ensure that the Huncote Leisure Centre site has all of the appropriate remedial actions it needs.
"We are continuing to work closely with our contractors whilst the work takes place, and apologise to all of those affected by the closure. We hope to be open again soon and thank them for their patience."
Whilst Huncote Leisure Centre remains closed, members of centre will be able to use Enderby Leisure Centre at no extra cost.
